Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was founded as Orient airways in 1946 based in Calcutta, India. In 1947 the independent state of Pakistan was formed and the operations shifted to Karachi. Orient Airways was nationalised to form Pakistan International Airlines Corporation. PIA airline is the national flag carrier of Pakistan. Its main operation hub is the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi. The secondary hubs are the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore and the Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Islamabad.
The airline serves 18 domestic and 25 international destinations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. It is Pakistan’s largest airline and operates around 100 flights daily. It was the second airline in Asia to acquire a Jet aircraft. It was the first non-communist airline to fly to China.
PIA airline has several codeshares and interline agreements with other airlines. The airline offers a Frequent Flyer program called ‘Awards +Plus’.
The airline has a modern fleet of aircraft designed to provide safe air travel to destinations. The airline’s fleet consists of 30 advanced aircraft: 12 Boeing 777, 11 Airbus A320, 3 ATR 42-500, and 4 ATR 72-500. Pakistan International Airlines is the first to operate all three variants of the 777 family - 777 - 200LR, 777 - 200ER and 777 - 300ER. It is the launch customer for 777 - 200LR and holds the record for the longest commercial jet flight.
The A320 is known to be fuel-efficient; the airline operates this aircraft on its domestic and regional short-haul routes. The ATRs use modern technology and are the latest type of aircraft to be inducted into the airline’s fleet. These are used for far-flung destinations.

The baggage allowance depends on the travel itinerary. For domestic flights, Economy class passengers can carry checked-in baggage of 20 kg and a carry-on bag of 7kg, Executive Economy class 25 kg and a carry-on bag of 7 kg and Business class 30 kg and a carry-on bag of up to 12 kg (1 piece of 7 kg and a small briefcase of 5 kg). Web check-in is available for select domestic routes only. Passengers can web check-in 24 hours and 6 hours before the flight departure through the airline’s website. To web check-in, the passengers have to retrieve the PIA flight booking by entering the PNR/booking reference/e-ticket number/last name.
Confirm the details and the check-in. Up on successful check-in the message ‘Successfully Checked In Passenger(s)’ will be displayed. Passengers can either email the boarding pass or print it. Passengers have to arrive 90 minutes before the scheduled flight departure at the airport counter. Baggage can be dropped off at the airport counter.
Passengers are provided with in-flight entertainment which offers movies, tv shows, music and audio. In-flight magazine ‘Humsafar’ written in English and Urdu is offered to all the passengers and is published bi-monthly. Complimentary meals and beverages are provided and passengers can pre-book special meals as per their dietary and religious needs.

Passengers can earn miles on PIA flights or when buying the services of the airline’s partners. The airline’s Frequent Flyer program Awards +Plus offer three Tier statuses: Emerald, Sapphire and Diamond. Each Tier offers unique benefits to the passengers. Depending on the Tier status passengers can get benefits like priority check-in and boarding, priority baggage handling and delivery to the baggage carousel, additional baggage, access to the Business class lounge and more.
Assistance is provided to passengers with special needs like expectant mothers and unaccompanied minors. Passengers with mobility problems are provided wheelchair assistance. Priority seating is offered to passengers with a disability and the most suitable seat is provided depending on the needs. Passengers can select a service that best suits their needs.
Passengers can cancel PIA bookings through the sales office or the airline’s website. A cancellation fee is charged.
